It's our Assembly next week!!

Posting Messages

I see that Thea has posted the answer to the Mystery Object question twice. She must really want to get it right!

Actually, I have changed the comment system a bit. When you post a message, it comes to me and I have to check it before it gets published on the blog. This is because I've started to get 'special' messages left automatically by people who want me to buy 'medicine'. It's a bit like junk email but I can stop it by making all messages come to me first. Don't worry, I can still see everything you send me but it might not appear on the blog straight away.

Today's Homework

After setting the precedent yesterday I can hardly change my policy and give homework on the second night of 'Splash' when there was none on the first. So, no homework again today but we will be working extra hard in class to make up for it. :-)

For those of you who are suffering from lack of work, here are a few quizzes to keep your brains ticking over until the next homework:
Story Planning Quiz
Punctuation Quiz
Language Quiz
Adjectives and Adverbs Quiz

You can keep a note of your score and tell me, if you like. I only got 7/10 on the Language Quiz! :-(

Today's Homework

  • None
  • Er..
  • That's it.

As so many people are in 'Splash' and more are going to watch it, Mr Hugo has kindly said that there is no homework today either. Rather than giving homework to just one or two children I think it's best if we give everyone the evening off, don't you?

So be good tomorrow as I've been so kind!

Mystery Object

Congratulations to Rayan and Ahmed for correctly identifying this

as an Aztec sunstone. It was used as a calendar. If you have been to the Aztecs website (and everyone has) then you will know what it is because there's a picture of it as soon as you get to the website.

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 1
  • Write 3 paragraphs about the Spanish invasion of the Aztec kingdom. They should fulfill the following requirements:
  1. 1st paragraph - 3 reasons why the invasion was a good thing;
  2. 2nd paragraph - 3 reasons why the invasion was a bad thing;
  3. 3rd paragraph - your opinion, including the reasons why you hold your opinion.

Now, Mr Hugo has kindly decided that those children who are involved in the MS show, 'Splash', should not do homework today. However, those who are not in the show are not giving up their spare time to rehearse, so they can use their spare time for homework!

I know that there will be the usual cries of 'It's Not Fair!!' but if we think about the number of hours the Splash people are rehearsing, after school and on Thursdays, perhaps we will realise that the Splash people are doing more work than the people who are not in the show.

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 3
  • Aztec/Spanish comparison paper - match the descriptions to the Spanish and the Aztecs. Write a couple of senteces for each section at the bottom of the page.

If you're stuck for ideas, watch the video again on the Ancient Mexico site (it's called La Conquista) or go to the Aztec site and see what you can find. You should be thinking about what the Spanish and Aztecs thought when they met for the first time.

Today's Homework

  1. Daily Maths 2
  2. Abacus 2 workbook p.69 & 71
  3. Key Comprehension p22-23 You can give this in on Wednesday
The last piece of comprehension we did was quite well done and most people are starting to write in full sentences. The thing to watch out for now though is the use of capital letters for names (people and places) and full stops at the end of a sentence. If you are using a word from the book, try to make sure it is spelled correctly.

Today's Homework

  1. Daily Maths 1
  2. Times Table 100square
  3. Cortes questions - answer these in your topic books. To find the answers you will need to use the Ancient Mexico and Aztec websites which are listed in the Explorers section on the right.

When you go to the Ancient Mexico website, click on the third button marked 'La Conquista' and watch the video.
La Conquista: The Fall of the Aztec Empire

When you go the Aztec website, click on Section 5

Everyday life of Aztec folk

This will provide you with the information you need.

Once again, if there are any reasons why you cannot do your homework, get a note in the diary. You seem to be getting better at this, which is nice.

ITGA!

It's That Girl Again! Thea came up with the goods once more to identify the mystery object of the week before anyone else, even correcting my mistake in calling the mystery man Harry Webb.

This is the man I meant

but this is the man whose name I first gave

A bonus point if anyone can tell me who the second man is. Not you Mr Howe!

We had a couple of other answers as well so thanks go to Ahmed and Youssef. Faster next time chaps!

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 3
  • Vasco da Gama questions - these should be done in your writing book. Write in full sentences please. As we seem to be going through a phase of people 'forgetting' books, do it on a piece of paper if you haven't got your book.

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 2
  • Explorer Picture - draw a picture of an imaginary explorer or adventurer (or both). Include details of their clothes, equipment and where they might be as a background
  • Abacus 2 workbook p.68

Swimming Gala Reducks

I hope everyone had a great time at the Swimming Gala yesterday. It was certainly exciting for me sitting in the office and putting all the scores into the computer, except for the one that Mr Howe did. It was very close all the way through and I can't believe that East and South actually had exactly the same scores after all of those races. Well done to West for winning the competition, even though they had the fewest swimmers.

Of course, it would have been better if everyone had turned up. I know that the House Leaders and Mr Hugo were really pleased with the competition and co-operation and teamwork that everyone showed. It's just a shame that some people decided that, even though they weren't ill, they just didn't want to be part of a school event and stayed at home. One person in our class came to the Swimming Gala even though he was ill, he wanted to join in so much.

It's important for all of us, that in order to get better at helping others, working together and building a school spirit, we should join in with the things that we do as a group. If we miss out, we aren't just missing out on a swim; we are missing out on the experience, the chance to learn new things and make new friendships. I'm sure all of the people at the Swimming Gala will remember their day. I wonder what those people who stayed at home with their tvs will remember.

Swimming Gala

Don't forget! It's the Swimming Gala tomorrow.

There is a list of races next to the changing rooms and I have one in the class. Make sure that you check it to find out which race you are in.

Things to remember:
  1. Swimming kit
  2. Swimming hat in your house colours
  3. A drink of water and a fruit snack
The Swimming Gala is not optional so I will see everyone tomorrow! Except Mishaal, who has an operation.
Normal lessons continue after lunch and that means clubs. If you have a swimming club it would be a good idea to bring a spare towel.

Mystery Object

Congratulations to Thea! She was the only one who answered the question about this cat

Of course, it is Bagpuss. He was an old cat who lived in a shop window. Emily used to bring in things she had found and leave them in the window for the owners to find. She said a poem to bring Bagpuss to life and it was this:

Bagpuss, Dear Bagpuss
Old Furry Cat Puss
Wake up and look at this thing
that I bring
Wake up, be bright
Be golden and light
Bagpuss oh hear what I sing.

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 1
  • 100 sq times table
  • Make an ancient map - it can be a map of an imaginary place. Draw the outline of the land, decorate it with place names, pictures, borders and make it look old by staining it with tea. Give it in on Monday

Sorry for not doing this on Saturday; I closed the window instead of saving the post. :-(
