How to do your homework

I thought I'd take this opportunity to make a quick point about homework, research and the best way to do it.

If you have to do some writing (like the planet presentation)
Look in books or the internet. See if you can find anything which well give you the information you need. Read the information. If you don't understand it, don't use it. If you do understand it, keep it. Carry on looking to see if there is anything better or anything extra. When you have found all that you need, read it, choose the bits that you want and REWRITE it in your own words. DO NOT copy everything from a book or website.

If you are finding a small amount of data or some very brief facts
In this case, where only a few words are needed (like the weather homework), it is ok to copy straight from a book or website because there is only one correct answer. You do not need to use your words because you are only using two or three words anyway.

I know that this will take time to learn and it is a hard thing to do, but too many people are copying things directly from books or websites and they just don't understand what they've written. Understanding is the most important part of learning, and without it all you can do is repeat things you have been told like a parrot.

If you have a little bit of information that you really understand, that is much better than 10 pages of printing that you cannot read or explain properly.

So Mums and Dads, thank you for all the support you are giving your children with their research. They have found a lot of interesting and useful stuff but you must make sure that they are doing the work and that they understand what they have found.

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 3
  • Abacus workbook p.32 - Adding and subtracting multiples of 10
  • Abacus Shape, Data and Measurement workbook p.125 - bar charts

Some people have some corrections to do from the fractions homework in the Abacus workbook. If you are one of them, please do the corrections at home as well.

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 2
  • Weather worksheet - choose a country, choose a city and then find out the information required to complete the sheet. If you are having problems finding the information, use the BBC Weather website. A link is provided in the previous message.

Take The Weather With You

Today's homework requires some research about the weather in different parts of the world. If you click on this link, you will be taken to the BBC Weather site and you can choose a country. From there you can choose a city in that country and it will tell you all the information you need to know. You need to remember which hemisphere you are researching.

If you want to use another source for your research, you can. Remember to write the name of the country and the city.

A Shocking Problem

For some reason, our classroom has become the favourite hang out of mosquitoes and every morning we have to swat away a cloud of them from the dark coloured places where they have settled. We even found two that had landed in our science experiment and got stuck! Mrs Ward was given a fly killer which is shaped like a tennis racket but the strings are made of metal and they electrocute the flies, thus avoiding the use of poisonous spray. If anyone could tell me where I might be able to buy one, I'd be most grateful. Someone mentioned Sawary Superstores but I don't know where that is.

I promise not to use it on the children, even when they don't listen.

Vote Early. Vote Often.

As you may have noticed, there is a new addition to the blog! As a brief glimpse of democracy, I have added a voting section. This week, the question is about what you use this blog for. Voting is open until Wednesday tea-time. Thanks to those who have voted already and I'm glad to see that nobody has gone for the last option. Yet.

Next week there will be a question about homework! Parents only for that one. I shall be restricting the franchise to those over 18.

Today's Homework

Sorry for the delay. I've been having trouble with the blog today and changes that I've made at school didn't seem to get saved. Anyway, here's the update:

  • Daily Maths 1
  • Letts p.53 Word and Sentence boxes only, along with question 5 from the Text box, as requested by the class :-)
You may have noticed that there is Arabic homework today. As explained in a letter, which many of the kids have left in their trays, there will now be the possibility of Arabic reading homework every day of the week. There should be no written work given, except on Sunday and Wednesday.

I also have the option of giving English reading homework on Arabic homework days. However, you should be reading every day, even if I don't give reading homework so I won't be writing it down but it should still be done.

Tuesday 22 January 2008

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 5 - as many see-saws as you can think of. Don't repeat the same number pairs.
  • Abacus SDM workbook p.123
  • Finish the design of your clock, including colouring it. Remember, you have to make it in class out of an old cereal box so don't do a very complicated design. And do it yourself!

We've had a great response to the cereal box appeal. Now we can't get into the classroom because of all the boxes but we might be able to squeeze a few more in so, if you haven't got one, bring it tomorrow please!

Monday 21 January 2008

Today's Homework

  • Handwriting workbook pages 14-17. Please read the instructions carefully. There is more than one thing to do on some pages.
  • Times table square
  • Daily Maths 3
  • Collect cereal boxes or shoe boxes and bring them to school. We're going to make something.

Click on the defenders to remove them. Make the sum correct, then click on the striker. If you score, you were right!

Subtraction Machine (Easy - Hard)
Pull the lever to choose your level.

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 1 - just write the missing numbers, not all of them
  • Abacus workbook p.31-33; 3 pages on fractions. You can colour p.32 if it helps
  • Correct any mistakes from the sentences last week. The ones that were too short or which had a lot of repetition.

A Word About Clubs

Some people seem to be getting a bit worried about clubs, especially if they are planning on being involved in the Middle School show this year. This is what I understand about clubs:
  • They will start tomorrow, on Sunday the 20th of January
  • All clubs will finish at 2.30, even the show club
  • I have not been told which clubs people are doing yet (this is at 10.30am)
It may be that the people in the show club will have to stay later or come in on different days later on but, as far as I know, they will finish at 2.30 tomorrow.

As soon as I have any other information I'll pass it on.

Tuesday 15 January 2008

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 4
  • Key Comprehension 4 page 9 - Due to a shortage of books, four people have kindly volunteered to do this homework on Wednesday instead. If you are doing it today, please give it in tomorrow. Otherwise, hand it in on Saturday.
  • Finish preparing your presentation - The most important thing to think about is your audience. You need to tell them about your planet. It doesn't matter if you have a poster or not. You have to talk to people and explain something about your planet. You MUST understand the things you are saying. DO NOT just copy something from a book and read it. Look at the class when you are telling them things. We will be asking questions when you have finished!

Amazing Inventions!

While I was browsing the web, hard at work on our topic, I came across this site about inventions that changed the modern world. I thought it was fascinating so I've added it to our list. Have a look and see how much things have changed since they were invented.

Time Travel

We had a very busy day in Y4 today. Some of us went to Hawaii, Singapore, Alaska, New York, Brazil and Sydney, all in an hour! Of course, there were lots of things to do in each place and it all depended on the time when we arrived. In Sydney, which was in our classroom, it was dinner time so we sat down for a little hot dog and some tv. The rest of the time was spent sleeping, having a bed time story, doing exercise and watching the stars in the night sky. Everyone had a lot of fun (some of us had a lot of hot dogs) and we've all learned a lot about how time changes around the world, I hope!

Saturday 12 January 2008

Today's Homework

  1. Daily Maths 1
  2. Learn your spellings
  3. Write 8 sentences that are NOT true. Remember your spelling rules!
  4. Begin researching your planet. You will be working with a partner in class but you need to prepare some research at home. Find books, find information on the internet and bring it to share with your partner.

Tuesday 8 January 2008

Today's Homework

  • Daily Maths 4
  • Write a factfile about the planet Earth. Use the factfiles we have written about the Sun and moon as a guide. Research Earth, thinking about the questions we talked about in class. You can also add your own. You should write at least 5 paragraphs BY SATURDAY. Do this in your Topic book, not on computer.

Yesterday's Homework

Apologies for not updating the page yesterday. I suppose I'm still not back into the routine either! Anyway, here's the homework for Monday.

  • Daily Maths 3
  • Letts p.57 - Remember we are trying to write in full sentences, using the words from the question to help us.

Saturday 5 January 2008

Today's Homework

Back into the routine straight away, as I'm sure you're glad to hear. Today's tasks are as follows:
  1. Daily Maths 1
  2. Learn spellings
  3. Abacus workbook pages 29-30
  4. Finish the 'Time' idea map - I would like as many words or ideas about time as you can think of written around the big 'Time' in the middle. If you want to draw pictures of things connected to time, you can. It should be clear and bright.

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to one and all and a Happy New Year! It was lovely to see so many people back for the first day of school today. We had 13! I hope that those who weren't here are just recovering from a tiring flight back, rather than limping around on a bad leg like Mrs Marshall. Anyway, I'm sure we'll see everyone soon enough.

So, back to school and back to work. We're almost half way through the year, or we will be soon. Doesn't time fly! And that brings me neatly on to our next topic: Time and Place. I'll be putting more information up on here in the near future but if you refer to the letter sent out at the end of last term you can find out more about it. See you later!
