One Week Over, Four To Go!

Phew! Wednesday again and another busy week ends in Y5-2. We've been up to our ears in maths tests this week, as well as a little bit of science work, drawing our eyes and all sorts of other things.

It looks like things are going to get a lot busier soon as well so check out the tab at the top of the page to find out about some upcoming events. A couple of things I do want to mention are the House Picnics; the next one is South House on Tuesday, and the House Poetry Competition. I'll tell you more about this on Saturday but you could start thinking about it now.

Here's a little quiz for you; whose eyes are these? Reply to this message to tell me the answers.

Ok, first day at the beach yesterday. Anyone sunburned? No? Just me then. Here's a few pics of our exciting first day:

Capturing Captions

Ok folks. Welcome back after a long break and a longer pause since my last message. I've finally got the blog working at school again so we'll be having a bumper crop of messages today. I'm starting off with a picture. This is the picture for the Y5 & 6 Caption Competition. Some of you finished it in school, some were going to do it at home. Remember, every entry gains your team 2HousePoints which could make all the difference at the end of the year! Good luck!

Downhill All The Way

We were out in the fresh air today, conducting one of the science experiments that is part of our topic 'The Physical World'. We were recording the effect of gravity and slope on the distance a car would roll. Our idea was that the steeper the slope, the further the car would roll. Here's some pictures:

There Are More Questions Than Answers

I see from the comments to a couple of posts (eg Funny Faces), that some people are wondering how I made the faces look so weird like this

or this

or this.

I don't really understand the fuss; isn't this what you look like normally? Ok, I admit it, I played around with the photos but I didn't use an 'app'. You young people, haven't you ever heard of doing something yourself?

Taking A Trip To Red Sea Mall

Whew! What a great trip that was! We had a lot of fun at Red Sea Mall today, going on the rides, screaming, taking photos, screaming, getting soaking wet on the Log Flume, screaming, feeling really sick on Jamaica, screaming, asking to have something to eat and screaming. A couple of us got a bit too bumped on the Bumper Cars and a couple of us needed a few too many reminders to act safely but mostly we had a good time. Here's a few photos and a little song to go with the trip.

Funny Faces

We've been working on symmetry lately and I've also been taking pictures of everyone for different reasons. What would happen if I tried to make a symmetrical face, I wondered? Here's what would happen...

Art Attacks

We've been doing some really nice pieces of art recently. A couple of people have gone into the Golden Book for their art work and you can see pictures of them elsewhere on this website. Here are some pictures that we did as part of our work on symmetry.

Playing Games

We went down to visit the YEs today, Mrs Jones' class in fact. We took the various board games we had made at the start of our Astronomy topic and the little kids seemed to really enjoy them. We did notice that they found it difficult to count up to 6, which made some of the games quite hard, and they were very shy to start off with but they almost all enjoyed themselves by the end of our visit and, as you can see, they were all smiling and happy by the end.

International Day ctd.

Here's some more photos from last week. Can you spot your face in the crowd?

International Day

Well, what a lovely time we had. We walked around the school and saw all the other children (and a lot of parents). We sat under a giant wobbly blue sheet and listened to the choir and the cast of Grease. We came back to class and enjoyed the food from different parts of the world. We listened to Anmar play the guitar so that he could achieve one of his targets. And the best part of all was that we still had time for a spelling test! Enjoy the photos.

Jeans For Genes

Thanks very much to everyone for all of your generosity on Jeans for Genes day. We had a lot of fun wearing our own clothes and collected a lot of money for a very good cause as well. We watched a video in assembly and another one in class about the problems that Jeans for Genes Day helps with. Actually, we're not helping problems, we're helping children and families and we had a really good talk about our lives and our families.

As promised, here's a photo of all of our happy faces on Jeans for Genes day

and here's a link to the Jeans for Genes website. You can watch the videos that we were talking about here.

Nassief House

Here's a few photos from our Nassief House trip. We only saw 3 out of the 107 rooms but the parts we did see were very interesting. There was a beautiful light in the main room

and an Ericsson phone!

We sat on the roof and enjoyed the breeze

and even had time for a snack on the terrace outside.

Super Students ctd.

Ok, here's the latest update. We've got our first two groups of the week lined up, looking happy on the carpet. We've got our newest pen licence winners smiling nicely for the camera and, coming soon, we'll have this week's Super Student. Enjoy the photos!

Super Students!

Here's another couple of wonderful world of Y5-2. Sarah and Laila have taken up the gauntlet thrown down by Jayvee last week and have earned themselves a pen licence as well. Our first girls! There's more on the way, I'm sure so buck up everyone else! Don't dilly dally.

A Rising Star of Y5-2

Here's someone who's done really well this week; it's Jayvee, sitting proudly at the teacher's desk because he was the first person in our class to get their Y5 pen licence. He tried really hard with his handwriting example and he has been working neatly in his other books as well. I wonder who will be the next to join him!

Today's Homework

Well, it says today but it should be Wednesday's. Anyway...

  1. Daily Maths 5
  2. Finish off your draft letter to Magrabi (should be almost finished)
  3. Bring in a fruit with seeds. Bonus pat on the back for bringing in the biggest seed or the most unusual fruit.
Almost at the end of Y5 now. I expect most of the class will be on holiday already (hint, hint). This week we'll try to finish off our magnetic games (some photos of finished games below), painting our faces - the clay ones that is - and doing lots and lots of work.

But! Because it's Friday, have a Ninja Cat.

Star of the Week!

This week, it's Ali. I sometimes have a problem thinking of people to put in the Golden Book and this week was one of those times. I was looking around the class, wondering who to choose, when I thought, "Ali is always sensible, always does his best and always has sensible things to say in class." So well done Ali.

End of Term

This is us at the end of the year. Clearly, everyone was a bit over-excited with Cara and Nadia only just stopping fighting on the floor in time for the photo.

Merry Christmas, Eid Mubarak and Happy New Year!
