Earth Hour

So, are you ready to put the lights out? It's Earth Hour at 8.30 tonight; the hour when people around the world try to turn out their lights as a small gesture towards conserving energy and looking after our planet. We can't make a big difference all by ourselves but we can make a small one and if enough of us do it, we might do enough to make a big one. Here's the video that we watched in class that gives us a short introduction to what is happening.


We were working on rotation of shapes today and some of us managed to get to play a little golf at the same time; maths golf that is. You have to move the ball into the hole in the smallest number of moves by rotating, reflecting or transforming the position. So far, Abdullah is in the lead with 41 points. Can anyone do better? Here's the game if you'd like to have a go.

The Shape of Things to Come

We had a visit from some Year 3s today, telling us all about the importance of recycling and reusing. We thought about how many shopping bags we use each week, and how much plastic and energy could be saved if we had one of the school's reusable bags to take to the shops with us. If you want to buy one, they are obtainable from Mrs Bennett at a reasonable 15SR each. After we thought about the bags we watched a short video about what happens to all the plastic we throw away.



We also did a little bit of work about shape today. Here's a matching game that you might like to try.

I've found a great site that lets you compete against kids from around the world in maths and spelling. You have a minute to get as many questions right as you can and, if you sign up to the website, it will keep a record of your top scores and how many games you've won.

3MM High Achievers!

Here's our latest batch of winners. Six people have moved up a level in 3MM recently: Michael, Yousef, Ula, Aly, Badr and Michaela. Some of them were here for a picture today. Well done everyone!

Subtraction Games

Here's some useful links for fun ways to practise subtraction.

1-digit sums (Very Easy)
Choose the number of questions and the time you need.

10 Questions (Easy - Hard)
Start off easy with subtraction up to 20 on Level 2 and then see if you can do Level 4, up to 100!

Subtraction Shoot Out (Very Easy)
Click on the defenders to remove them. Make the sum correct, then click on the striker. If you score, you were right!

Subtraction Machine (Easy - Hard)
Pull the lever to choose your level.

Area and Perimeter

Find the area of a rectangle
An easy game but you can change the difficulty after you win the first round.

Addition Games

Number Bonds to 1000 - make pairs that equal 1000

Number Bonds to Anything - you can choose your own bonds. Make pairs that equal 10000 if you like!

More Number Bonds - you can choose your own, and you can make number bonds by adding or subtracting

Duck Shoot - count in tens and shoot the duck with the right number

Number Darts - put the dart in the right place to make a number; you might need to use doubles

Number bonds to 20 & 100 - fix the slide by making the number bonds

Counting On - count on in any number; you can also choose where to start and how much to count on

BBC Fractions
Click on the largest fraction to get your dolphin to win the race. Can you win the race on Hard?
In the second game, put the fractions in the right place on the fraction wall. There are 3 levels to choose from .

It's fraction time again in Y4-5. Lots of us are having problems with fractions, especially converting one fraction to another. Here's an idea!
