Mystery Question Answered!

The real Jack the Giant killer was a Cornishman who slew a terrible giant who had been plaguing the poor people of Cornwall for many years. The story is thought to be over a thousand years old and refers to some real places in Cornwall although whether it actually happened is debateable.

You can read more about the story, and tales of other giants Jack killed, by clicking here.

You should also record where you discovered this information: book, person, website etc

If you want to draw a title page for your Myths and Legends topic you can do that as well.

Group Winners

Last week we found ourselves looking at Group 3 as the winners, yet again! They must be lucky seats or something. However, it was not the same people because we had swapped our places around a bit so this week the prizes went to Deborah, Arouba and Adlan. Well done North house!

Today's Homework

  1. Oort Cloud Week 5 - it's the last one today. Try to make it the best one! You have reached your destination and your mission is almost complete. Will it succeed and make you a hero or will it fail and you will return to Earth without the important information? Make sure you write about how you feel about your mission and what your reactions are to what you see. Did you see the star being born? How did your crew feel?
  2. Daily Maths 4 & 5

Mystery Question Answered!

According to this website, Pluto changes colour at different stages of its orbit. It has been observed to be red recently. The reason for this is because the Sun's light is breaking down the methane on the surface of Pluto. This chemical reaction leaves behind a red carbon residue. So there you go.

Today's Homework

  1. Reading Log - choose 1 activity and do it in your reading log book
  2. Abacus PCM p.37 & 38
  3. Reading
Don't forget to keep working on your presentation! It will be on Wednesday and it needs to be about space or astronomy in some way. I'm looking for the people who can talk in an interesting way without reading from a paper.

Saturday, 6 February 2010

Mystery Question Answered!

Last week's question was about which was more; the height of the tallest mountain or the depth of the deepest ocean trench. The answer is...the ocean depth! In fact, the ocean is quite a lot deeper in some places than the tallest mountain is high. Some people say that our oceans are the last unexplored areas on Earth. Perhaps one day people will be able to go to the very bottom of the ocean as we can now go to the top of Mt Everest.

Anyway, congratulations to the winners. I told them who they were in class but now I've forgotten. I'm sure they were well rewarded though. :-)

Today's Homework

  1. Daily Maths 1 & 2
  2. Prepare a presentation about Astronomy for Wednesday. You may talk about any part of what we have studied; the people, the ideas, the planets and stars. You can show a PowerPoint presentation, a poster, pictures. You can use nothing but your memory if you wish. The only rules are: you must speak for 90 seconds or more. You must not read from a paper or from the board. Good luck!

Wednesday, 3 February 2010

  2. Finish the constellation story

Super Students!

I'm a bit behind, what with being away for a few days and the computer not letting me put pictures on the blog. Anyway, here's a couple who were missed out last week: Saleh was put in the Golden Book a couple of weeks ago and our best group last week was Group 3. Well done to them all.

The Shape of Things to Come

We had a visit from some Year 3s today, telling us all about the importance of recycling and reusing. We thought about how many shopping bags we use each week, and how much plastic and energy could be saved if we had one of the school's reusable bags to take to the shops with us. If you want to buy one, they are obtainable from Mrs Bennett at a reasonable 15SR each. After we thought about the bags we watched a short video about what happens to all the plastic we throw away.

We also did a little bit of work about shape today. Here's a matching game that you might like to try.
