The Great Debate - The Not So Great Results!

Well, I'm sure we'll all be shocked to learn that, following our first debate, in which ideas were expressed vigorously but politely, the class voted by 21-0 in favour of banning homework. That was the easy bit; the hard bit will be convincing Mr Hugo to agree as well!

Although there were lots of reasons given in favour of banning homework (lack of time to play, repetitiveness, difficulty), the main reason for keeping it seemed to be that it makes you smarter. Perhaps we should perform an experiment; half the class do no homework and half do for 6 months and we'll see if there's any difference at the end of the year. Any volunteers?

Today's Homework

  1. Daily Maths 3
  2. Prepare for the debate tomorrow; are you 'for' or 'against' the proposition that homework should be banned? Make sure you have something to say. You might want to write down your ideas.
  3. Island Homework Week 2 - write about how you got to the island, what your thoughts were when you arrived, what your feelings were. Remember to choose the five people you want to take with you and explain your choices.

Constructors' Championship

Last week we finished off the model towns or cities that we had been making. A lot of time was spent on them and there was even a bit of effort put into making them look as attractive as possible. There were a few problems transforming ideas into reality and we realised the importance of both gravity and foundations when many of the buildings fell off the paper as soon as we stuck them on the wall. However, the 'before' pictures look great and one group in particular produced an amazing looking park and town.

The Weekly Debate!

Part of our work this term will involve argument. Oh no it won't, oh yes it will etc etc. What I mean is, we'll be working on how to make an effective argument, how to fix the facts around our opinions, how to state our case in a way that will convince other people. As part of our work we'll be having a debate every week or so. The first one this week is on the subject of homework. You can see the question up in the top right of the blog and we'll find out what people think on Tuesday!

Today's Homework

  1. Finish off your settlement plan. Make sure that you include a key to explain what each section on the map is and as much detail as possible. Think about buildings, open areas like parks and fields, rivers, sea, lakes and anything else you might like. Colour it if that makes it easier to understand.
  2. Abacus workbook p.114, 116 and 121. Some people have done some of it already. This is mostly a finishing off exercise.

Welcome Back!

Hello everyone and welcome back to another fantastic year in Y5 with Mr Ward!!!!

Did you know, you are the last class born in the 20th century to come into Y5! Next year, most of the children will have been born in 2000, the 21st century. Gosh, that makes me feel old!

Anyway, I hope you all had a good holiday with plenty of fun and frolics with your friends and family. Back to school doesn't mean that the fun has to end but we do need to get our heads for some hard work. Let's get to it!
